CHIEF ANDREW ISAAC,
FAIRBANKS ALASKA
Completed in 2022, the CAI Health Center is a 108,000 SF, three-story healthcare facility in Fairbanks, Alaska. A collaboration with HOK & Architects Alaska. Addressing TCC’s vision, the enlarged health center offers advanced services, including an Ambulatory Surgery Center, cancer care, specialty clinics, laboratory services, and diagnostic imaging.

The design paid homage to the culture of the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) community. The original building’s exterior intricately mirrored cultural motifs inspired by rivers, fish, and forests. The new building maintains a low, horizontal silhouette, mirroring the original’s exterior finishes and appearance. Central to the expanded facility is the “Heritage Hall,” a dedicated space showcasing curated exhibits, informative signage, and wall graphics. These highlight native medicinal plants, intricately interwoven throughout the building, further cementing the bond between the structure and TCC’s cultural roots.
